Jonah James Romm (b. 2003) is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, and independent curator based in Ridgewood, Queens. A graduate of the Bard College Studio Arts program, their practice is informed by art historical research, theoretical reading, and cultural critique.

Recent solo exhibitions include The Nausea at Kaleidoscope Gallery in Brooklyn; Jonah’s debut in New York City. Based on Jean-Paul Sartre’s seminal work of existentialist fiction, The Nausea explored themes of dissociation, bodily dysmorphia, and mirroring. Activated by a reading and experimental music performances, the exhibition opening took on temporal as well as plastic forms. Pulling from texts by Deleuze, Lacan, and Ovid, The Nausea posits a theory of disembodied visualization through the reflection of a mirror.

Jonah’s thesis exhibition at Bard College, Every Angel Is Terrifying, took its title from Rainer Maria Rilke’s Duino Elegies. The layered, multimedia paintings focused on the conflation of beauty and fear through the imagery of Kabbalistic angels known as seraphim. Spanning watercolor studies, ceramic sculpture, and installation, the exhibition marked a pivotal expansion in Jonah’s formal repertoire, which continues to inform their varied approach to painting and works on paper.
